Near-Inertial Waves and Turbulence Driven by the Growth of Swell

چکیده
Abstract Between 5% and 25% of the total momentum transferred between atmosphere ocean is transmitted via growth long surface gravity waves called “swell.” In this paper, we use large-eddy simulations to show that swell-transmitted excites near-inertial drives turbulent mixing deepens a rotating, stratified, boundary layer. We find currents are less effective at producing turbulence layer than driven by an stress. Overall, however, differences swell-driven surface-stress-driven layers relatively minor. consequence, our results corroborate assumptions made in Earth system models neglect vertical structure fluxes instead parameterize all air–sea transfer processes with

Evolution of near-inertial waves
The three-dimensional evolution of near-inertial internal gravity waves is investigated for the case of a laterally unbounded fluid layer of constant finite depth. A general Green’s function formulation is derived which can be used to solve initial value problems or study the effect of forcing. The Green’s function is expanded in vertical normal modes, and is very singular. Convolutions with fi...
متن کاملInertial waves in rotating grid turbulence
Using liquid helium, liquid nitrogen, and water as test fluids, we attempt to generate homogeneous turbulence in a steadily rotating system. We create turbulence by pulling a grid in rotating channels with both square and round cross sections, and observe large-scale inertial waves in the flow. These inertial waves quickly sense the boundaries, and resonate at frequencies characteristic of the ...

15 صفحه اولDriven inertial waves in spherical Couette flow.
Dynamo action in the cores of planets and stars gives rise to their magnetic fields. We explore spherical Couette flows in liquid sodium as a laboratory model of the Earth’s core. Below, we image various spatiotemporal magnetic-field modes present in spherical Couette flows. Our apparatus is comprised of two independently driven rotating spheres, radii 20 and 60 cm, with sodium filling the gap ...
متن کاملInertial particle segregation by turbulence.
We study collections of heavy and light small spherical particles initially well mixed with each other, subjected to linear (Stokes) drag force and gravity, and falling through a fluid turbulence. We introduce the segregation power spectrum, which we use to define the segregation length scale. Kinematic simulation predicts that the turbulence can segregate heavy and light falling particles and ...
